Title
1. What makes your wigs different from store-bought wigs?
Our wigs are crafted with care, using high-quality materials and medical-grade caps to ensure comfort and a natural look — specifically made for children experiencing hair loss, not just fashion purposes.
2. Can my child swim, play sports, or be active while wearing the wig?
Yes! We provide secure-fitting wigs that are designed to stay in place during light activities. For water-based activities, we recommend using a backup wig or swim cap.
3. What if the wig doesn’t fit or my child doesn’t like it?
We’ll work with you to adjust or replace the wig at no cost. Your child’s comfort and confidence are our priority.
4. How do we clean and maintain the wig at home?
Each family receives easy care instructions along with suggested products. We also offer virtual support for ongoing maintenance.
5. Can you help style the wig to match my child’s old hairstyle?
Absolutely. We do our best to recreate a familiar look that helps your child feel more like themselves again.
6. What if my child’s hair starts growing back?
That’s wonderful news! Many families continue to use the wig during regrowth. We also offer tips on transitioning during this phase.
7. Can siblings also apply if more than one child is affected?
Yes, each child will be considered individually. We’re happy to serve siblings if they both qualify.
8. Are wigs heat-safe or can we use curling irons and flat irons?
Some of our wigs are heat-friendly, especially human hair wigs. We’ll let you know what’s safe based on the wig type you receive.
9. Do you provide wig caps or accessories with the wig?
Yes, every child receives a starter kit, which may include wig caps, a brush, and care items to help maintain their new wig.
10. How long will the wig last before needing a replacement?
With proper care, a wig can last 6 to 12 months or more. We recommend one new wig per year for active wearers.
11. Can you help with wigs for children who’ve experienced hair loss from trauma or abuse?
Yes. We serve children with emotional or psychological causes of hair loss as well as medical ones. All cases are handled with confidentiality and compassion.
12. Do we need to show proof of income to qualify?
In most cases, no income verification is required, but we do ask a few basic questions to make sure we’re helping families truly in need.
14. Will the wig cause itching or irritation on my child’s scalp?
We use soft, breathable, medical-grade caps. If your child has extra sensitivity, we offer tips and accessories to reduce irritation.
15. Can my child cut or dye the wig if they want a new look?
Yes, especially if the wig is made from human hair. We recommend letting a stylist experienced in wigs make any changes to ensure it stays in good condition.
16. Are there community events or meetups for children with wigs?
We’re working on hosting future events and wig days, where kids can meet others going through similar experiences. Stay tuned!
17. How is your organization funded to provide these free wigs?
Hair from the Heart is funded through donations, grants, and community support. Every wig is provided with love thanks to our supporters.
18. Can we help support the organization in return (volunteer, fundraise, etc.)?
Yes! We welcome volunteers, fundraisers, and donors who want to give back or help another child smile again.
19. Do you offer head coverings, scarves, or hats in addition to wigs?
Yes, we offer scarves, beanies, and other soft head coverings for kids who may want an alternative to wearing their wig all the time.
20. Can I speak with another parent who has been through the process
Yes. Upon request, we can connect you with a parent mentor who’s been through our program and can share their experience.
21. Do you help children with short-term hair loss?
Yes. With children who need a more immediate solution, they can receive a synthetic wig which they can wear while their hair grows back!
22. Do you help all children?
Yes, we provide hairpieces to children under age 21 in the U.S. and Canada regardless of race, creed, or religion.
23. How does a child apply for a hairpiece?
Applications are available on our website or can be mailed to you. We need a completed application along with a medical diagnosis, photo of the child, most recent tax return and two letters of recommendation.
24. Are your recipients charged any money for their hairpiece?
NO! Our recipients receive their custom prostheses, FREE OF CHARGE. Additionally, we provide a regular FREE “wig” for them to wear during the production period.
25. Can I use a blow dryer to dry the hairpiece?
We strongly encourages air drying over blow drying. If necessary, air dry the hairpiece (80% air dry) and then finish with the blow dryer (blow dry remaining 20%).
26. How do I use the conditioner?
Do not apply the conditioner to the roots of the hairpiece. Start applying the conditioner approximately one inch away from the roots.
27. How long does the hairpiece last?
